An Essential Guide On How To Operate A Water Softener

A water softener is important because it helps to soften hard water. In effect, this fortifies the durability of appliances and generally counters the negative effects of hard water. It uses numerous small resin beads inside the tank to filter out minerals such as calcium and magnesium ions. Salt is also used in the process in order to clean the resin beads especially during the regeneration cycle. This ensures constant removal of hardness from the water system and thus leading to soft water.

After installing a water softener in your home, the next hurdle you need to  get through is learning how to operate it.

How To Operate A Water Softener

1. Use the recommended water pressure range

Adjust the water softener so that it can operate at an appropriate pressure. This usually ranges from 1.4 atmospheres to 8.2 atmospheres. Most water softeners are usually designed to operate within that range of pressure to prevent bursting.

2. Set regeneration cycle

Ensure that you adjust the regeneration cycle to an appropriate duration. This mainly depends on the number of people living in the house, which determines the amount of gallons being softened. In general, the regeneration cycle may take three hours.

During this process, hard water containing calcium and magnesium salts usually bypasses the water conditioner. You should however take precaution to avoid using hot water during the regeneration cycle because it may end up introducing hard water impurities in the brine tank.

3. Isolate the water softener

Ensure that the water softener is adjusted separate from the water supply. This can be done by a specific valve called bypass valve. It is found on the control at the back. Simply rotate the knob in a clockwise direction up to the point where the two knobs, on and off lock into each other unlike during normal operation.

You can go back and continue with water softening process by rotating the knobs in a reverse direction (anti-clockwise direction)

4. Set the timer accurately

Make sure that the 24 hour time on the water softener is in line with the correct time on your watch. This is important because it helps to achieve proper and desirable cycling of the water softener. Long press the RED button in order to remove the driver gear. Then adjust the big dial to correspond to the appropriate time of the day arrow which is located at the bottom of the panel. In order to re-engage the disengaged gear, simply release your hand off form the RED button.

5. Choose one method to reset the frequency of automatic regeneration

Rotate the ‘people’ dial so that the number of people coincides with grains per gallon on the scale of water hardness. Remove your hand off the dial and confirm engagement at setting.

6. Regenerate manually

In the event that you run short of water due to insufficient regeneration, you may resort to regenerate manually. This can be done by turning the big knob which is located in front of the control to REGEN position. This allows the water softener to complete the regeneration cycle hence returning to water softening service.

Conclusion

In conclusion, operating a water softener is easy as long as you follow the right procedure. Just ensure that you adjust the necessary settings and take the necessary precautions like avoiding the addition of hot water. In addition, ensure that the amount of salt and brine in the brine tank is maintained for the best results on top of regularly cleaning your softener.
