How to Fix your Water Softener Unit

Water softeners will malfunction over time. They often malfunction when salt builds up in the unit, the resin bed has not been cleaned or when the injector is not working properly. The following steps will show you how to fix your unit once it starts to breakdown.

Step 1

Purge the Water from your Softener Tank

When your water softener tank starts breaks down you must purge (or discharge the water) from the unit. Purging the tank will allow you to thoroughly inspect and clean out the unit. Most tanks have a manual knob that is used for this purpose. This knob can be turned by hand or with the help of a tool. This first step is necessary because if you do not purge your tank you cannot clean it out and make your water softening unit work properly.

Step 2

Clean the Brine Tank

Salt can build up in the brine tank over time. This substance will often cake up and become hard. You can use a broom, a stick or some type of tool to remove the salt from the tank. You should break up any clumps of salt and then remove them from the tank. Then you will need to vacuum out the tank to get rid of any loose salt that is at the bottom of the unit. Make sure to wash away any residue from the sides of the tank. As an added step you should let the tank completely dry after you wipe it down and then go back to eliminate any remaining particles.

Step 3

Clean the Resin Bed

The resin bed on a water softener tank filters out iron, chlorine and other elements. If a resin bed has picked up too much iron, then it will need to be cleaned. Iron-out is a substance that is designed to remove iron particles from a resin bed. This substance works by circulating through the tank attracting iron particles as it moves through the unit. The iron deposits are then removed once the water is dispelled from the tank. You can can carry out this process by by using the manual regeneration cycle. After this happens you will then need to purge the waste water and your resin bed should be cleaned.

Step 4

Clean off the Resin Tank Injector

The injector unit on a tank will sometimes get clogged with salt and dirt. You will need to clean the injector once in a while to ensure that the salt solution is flowing properly through the tank. You will need to turn off the bypass valve to start cleaning this part of your unit. This will shut off the water. The next thing that you must do is to relieve the water pressure by running it through the manual regeneration cycle.

Once the water has been removed you can start to clean the injector. Wipe off of the injector and clean the inside of the tube as well. There some special tube cleaning brushes that can help you with this part of the cleaning process. Once you clean the unit it should inject brine into your water without any problems.

Step 5

Check your Tank’s Motor

All water softener tanks have a motor. If your motor goes bad, then it will cause your unit to malfunction. You can diagnose your motor for problems by inspecting it. Turn your motor on and look it while it operates. If it makes a strange noise or produces sparks turn off your motor because it will need to be repaired. If you do not know how to fix the motor on your unit do not attempt to fix it.

Call in a professional technician who is qualified to repair your water softening unit. Doing this will save you time, money and a lot of unnecessary problems. You should also check the hose(s) on a unit to ensure that it is not not damaged, chaffed or broken. If the hose is damaged then replace it since it will help your tank to run more efficiently.
